Expert Central AC Repair for Homes and Businesses

AC Repair addresses the cooling equipment, controls, airflow, refrigeration circuit, condensate drainage and electrical components that remove heat and humidity from the building. Good diagnosis considers indoor and outdoor equipment together instead of assuming one component is responsible.

What This Job Entails

AC Repair — The Full Breakdown

Exactly what we do, what you get, and what to expect — answered the way a careful customer would ask.

What exactly is included in this service?

  • Full diagnostic assessment of the indoor and outdoor system components
  • Electrical component testing including capacitors, contactors, and control circuits
  • Refrigerant pressure measurement and system performance evaluation
  • Identification and explanation of the root cause before any repairs begin
  • Completion of all approved repair work during the scheduled visit
  • EPA-compliant refrigerant handling, recovery, and recharge where applicable
  • System restart and functional testing through a complete cooling cycle
  • Cleanup of the work area and review of findings with the customer

What is NOT included?

  • Replacement parts beyond those required for the diagnosed repair (e.g. coil replacement, full system replacement)
  • Permit fees if a permit is required for the scope of work
  • After-hours or weekend premium dispatch charges if applicable
  • Ductwork repairs or modifications identified during the visit
  • Wall, ceiling, or floor patching if access cuts are required for line set or drain repairs

How long does the job take?

Expected duration: Most standard component repairs (capacitor, contactor, fan motor, condensate drain) take 1 to 2 hours from arrival to completion. Repairs requiring refrigerant leak testing, coil cleaning, or more complex electrical diagnosis typically take 2 to 4 hours. Technicians will provide a more specific estimate once the diagnosis is complete.

Is the work warrantied or guaranteed?

Tandem Mechanical guarantees all workmanship performed on central AC repairs for a period of one year from the date of service. If a repair we performed fails due to a workmanship defect within that period, we will return to correct it at no additional labor charge. Parts and equipment carry the manufacturer's own warranty, which varies by brand and component. Warranty coverage does not extend to unrelated system failures or failures caused by lack of maintenance, power surges, or other external factors.

Signs You May Need AC Repair

If you're experiencing any of these issues, a technician can diagnose the problem and recommend the right solution.

System runs but blows warm or room-temperature air
Air conditioner won't turn on or respond to thermostat
Circuit breaker trips repeatedly when AC is running
Ice or frost forming on the refrigerant lines or evaporator coil
Unusual noises — grinding, squealing, rattling, or banging — from indoor or outdoor unit
Weak or uneven airflow from supply registers throughout the home
Water leaking from the indoor air handler or around the drain pan
System short-cycles — turns on and off frequently without completing a full cooling cycle
Outdoor condenser unit runs but indoor blower does not, or vice versa
Repair First

Repair When It Makes Sense. Replace Only When It Makes Sense.

Our first job is to diagnose the problem. We do not assume a failed system automatically needs replacement.

For systems under 10 years old with a single component failure — a capacitor, contactor, fan motor, or clogged drain — repair is almost always the right economic choice. As systems approach 12–15 years of age, more significant failures such as a refrigerant leak requiring coil replacement or a compressor failure may warrant a replacement conversation, particularly if the system uses R-22 refrigerant, which is no longer manufactured and carries significant recharge costs. Tandem Mechanical will always give you an honest assessment of your repair-to-value ratio, factoring in equipment age, condition, efficiency ratings, and the cost of the needed repair, so you can make a well-informed decision without pressure.

If replacement is the practical choice, qualifying installation financing may be available. Subject to approval.

Types of Systems We Service

Split-System Central AC

The most common residential configuration, consisting of an outdoor condensing unit and an indoor evaporator coil paired with a furnace or air handler. We service all split-system equipment regardless of brand or age.

Packaged Central AC Unit

A self-contained unit where all components — compressor, condenser, and evaporator — are housed in a single outdoor cabinet, common in light commercial buildings and some residential applications.

Heat Pump in Cooling Mode

Air-source heat pumps operate as air conditioners during warm months and share many of the same failure modes. Tandem Mechanical diagnoses and repairs heat pump cooling issues including reversing valve faults and refrigerant problems.

Two-Stage and Variable-Speed Systems

Higher-efficiency systems with multi-stage compressors or variable-speed blower motors require technicians familiar with their more complex control logic and diagnostic procedures.

Older R-22 Systems

Systems manufactured before 2010 often use R-22 refrigerant. We handle diagnostics and repairs on these systems and can advise on refrigerant availability and replacement planning.

Residential & Commercial AC Repair

Residential Service

For homeowners across Western Massachusetts, Worcester County, and Northern Connecticut, a functioning central air conditioner is essential during humid summer months. Tandem Mechanical services all residential split-system and packaged AC configurations, from older single-stage equipment to modern variable-speed systems. We understand that a cooling failure is disruptive and time-sensitive, so we work efficiently to diagnose the problem accurately on the first visit and complete the repair with minimal disruption to your household. Whether your system is five years old or fifteen, our technicians bring the tools and training to properly evaluate its condition and restore reliable operation.

Commercial Service

Commercial central air conditioning systems serve larger footprints, operate more continuous duty cycles, and affect the comfort of employees, customers, and tenants. Tandem Mechanical services light commercial split systems and packaged rooftop units in offices, retail spaces, and multi-tenant buildings throughout the region. We understand that a cooling failure in a commercial setting can impact business operations, and our technicians are equipped to work around operational schedules where possible. From diagnosing a failed contactor on a rooftop unit to locating a refrigerant leak in a multi-zone system, we bring the same methodical diagnostic approach to every commercial job.

Performance & Quality Factors

Central AC performance depends on a correctly sized system, a clean and leak-free refrigerant circuit, unobstructed airflow through both coils, and properly functioning electrical controls. A system that is low on refrigerant, has a fouled evaporator coil, or is operating with a weak capacitor will struggle to meet thermostat setpoints, run longer cycles, and consume significantly more electricity. Tandem Mechanical's repair process always includes a performance verification step — measuring supply air temperature differential, operating pressures, and electrical amperage — to confirm the system is operating within manufacturer specifications after any repair.

Maintenance & Troubleshooting

Preventive maintenance is the single most effective way to avoid mid-season central AC failures. An annual tune-up performed in spring before cooling season begins allows a technician to identify weakening capacitors, marginal refrigerant charge, dirty coils, and clogged drain lines before they cause a full system shutdown. Homeowners can support system performance between professional visits by replacing air filters on schedule, keeping the area around the outdoor condenser clear of vegetation and debris, and ensuring supply and return registers are unobstructed. If you notice the system running longer than usual to meet setpoint, producing less-cold air, or making new noises, scheduling a diagnostic visit promptly typically results in a smaller repair than waiting until the system stops altogether.
