What's Wrong With Your Mini-Split? We Can Find Out.

Mini-Split Repair is part of the building heating system and may involve heat production, circulation or airflow, thermostats and controls, electrical components, safety devices, pumps, valves, distribution equipment and related piping or ductwork. We diagnose the system before recommending repair or replacement so the work addresses the actual cause of the comfort problem.

What This Job Entails

Mini-Split Repair — The Full Breakdown

Exactly what we do, what you get, and what to expect — answered the way a careful customer would ask.

What exactly is included in this service?

  • Diagnostic assessment of both indoor and outdoor unit(s)
  • Fault code retrieval and interpretation using manufacturer diagnostic procedures
  • Refrigerant pressure measurement and evaluation
  • Visual inspection of electrical components, coils, drain system, and refrigerant lines
  • Plain-language explanation of findings and repair options before any work begins
  • Completion of approved repairs during the visit (subject to parts availability)
  • System restart and operational testing across all modes after repair
  • Cleanup of the work area before the technician departs

What is NOT included?

  • Replacement parts beyond the scope of the diagnosed repair (priced separately)
  • Refrigerant itself — if recharge is required, refrigerant is billed as a material cost
  • Permit fees if required by local jurisdiction for refrigerant work
  • Repairs to wall surfaces, ceilings, or finishes disturbed to access drain lines or wiring
  • After-hours or weekend emergency dispatch (standard scheduling applies to this service)

How long does the job take?

Expected duration: Most standard mini-split repairs — such as drain clearing, capacitor replacement, or refrigerant adjustment — are completed in 1 to 3 hours. More complex repairs involving control boards, refrigerant leak location and recharge, or motor replacement typically require 3 to 5 hours. If a part must be ordered, the diagnostic and any preparatory work will be completed at the first visit and the repair finished at a follow-up appointment.

Is the work warrantied or guaranteed?

Workmanship on repairs performed by Tandem Mechanical is guaranteed for one year from the date of service. If the same issue recurs within that period due to a workmanship deficiency, we will return and correct it at no additional labor charge. Manufacturer warranties on installed replacement parts vary by brand and component — our technician will note applicable part warranties on your service documentation. The workmanship warranty does not cover new or unrelated failures that develop after the repair is completed.

Signs You May Need Mini-Split Repair

If you're experiencing any of these issues, a technician can diagnose the problem and recommend the right solution.

System displays a flashing error code or fault light
Indoor unit runs but produces no heat or no cooling
Ice forming on the indoor air handler or outdoor coil
Water dripping from the indoor unit onto walls or floors
Unusual grinding, rattling, or clicking noises during operation
Reduced airflow or weak temperature output from one or more zones
Outdoor unit fan not spinning or compressor not starting
Remote control or wall controller not communicating with the unit
Repair First

Repair When It Makes Sense. Replace Only When It Makes Sense.

Our first job is to diagnose the problem. We do not assume a failed system automatically needs replacement.

Repair is the right choice in most cases where the compressor is intact, the refrigerant circuit is sound, and the unit is fewer than 10-12 years old. Isolated component failures — a bad capacitor, a failed control board, a clogged drain, a worn fan motor — are nearly always more cost-effective to repair than to replace the whole system. Replacement becomes the better option when the compressor has failed on an older unit, when refrigerant leaks are severe and unlocatable, or when a system has experienced repeated failures indicating general end-of-life decline. Tandem Mechanical will give you an honest assessment of both paths so you can make an informed decision.

If replacement is the practical choice, qualifying installation financing may be available. Subject to approval.

Types of Systems We Service

Single-Zone Heat Pump Mini-Split

One outdoor condenser paired with one indoor air handler, providing both heating and cooling — the most common residential ductless configuration.

Multi-Zone Mini-Split System

One outdoor unit serving two to five or more indoor air handlers independently, each controllable to different temperatures — common in larger homes and commercial spaces.

Cooling-Only Mini-Split

Ductless systems configured for air conditioning only, without reverse-cycle heat pump capability — often found in server rooms, additions, or supplemental cooling applications.

Ceiling Cassette Mini-Split

Indoor units mounted flush in the ceiling for 360-degree airflow distribution, common in commercial and open-plan residential spaces.

Concealed Duct Mini-Split

Indoor units installed inside a ceiling cavity with short duct runs, combining the efficiency of ductless technology with a more traditional air-distribution appearance.

Floor-Mounted Mini-Split

Indoor units installed near floor level, useful in spaces with limited wall or ceiling mounting options, such as rooms with large windows or low ceilings.

System function test across all operating modes — heating, cooling, fan, and dehumidification — before job completion

Residential & Commercial Mini-Split Repair

Residential Service

Ductless mini-splits are increasingly the heating and cooling solution of choice in New England homes — particularly in older homes without ductwork, room additions, finished basements, and home offices. When a residential mini-split fails in the middle of a Massachusetts winter or a Connecticut summer heat wave, restoring comfort quickly matters. Tandem Mechanical services residential mini-split systems of all configurations, from single-zone bedroom units to whole-home multi-zone systems, diagnosing and repairing problems at both the air handler and the outdoor condenser. We work carefully around finished interior spaces, protect flooring and walls during service, and leave the work area clean.

Commercial Service

Mini-split systems are widely used in commercial settings including offices, retail spaces, medical suites, server rooms, and multi-tenant buildings throughout Western Massachusetts, Worcester County, and Northern Connecticut. A failed zone in a commercial environment can affect staff productivity, temperature-sensitive equipment, or tenant comfort obligations. Tandem Mechanical provides efficient commercial mini-split repair service with technicians experienced in multi-zone systems, ceiling cassette configurations, and the higher-duty-cycle demands of commercial operation. We coordinate scheduling to minimize disruption to business operations.

Performance & Quality Factors

Mini-split performance depends on maintaining a proper refrigerant charge, clean heat-exchange coils, unobstructed airflow across both indoor and outdoor units, and functional control electronics. A system operating with even a modest refrigerant undercharge will struggle to reach setpoint temperatures and will run longer cycles, increasing wear and energy consumption. Dirty indoor coils reduce heat transfer and can cause the evaporator to ice over, while a blocked outdoor coil forces the compressor to work harder and shortens its service life. Regular filter cleaning by the building occupant combined with periodic professional maintenance keeps all these factors in check.

Maintenance & Troubleshooting

Most mini-split manufacturers recommend professional maintenance once per year — twice per year for systems operating in both heating and cooling seasons, which is the norm in New England. Maintenance should include cleaning or replacing the washable indoor filters, inspecting and cleaning the indoor evaporator coil, clearing the condensate drain pan and line, checking outdoor coil cleanliness, testing operating pressures, and inspecting all electrical connections and control components. Between professional visits, occupants should clean the indoor filters every four to six weeks during active use — clogged filters are one of the most common causes of reduced output, icing, and premature component wear. Tandem Mechanical offers maintenance agreements that include scheduled inspections and priority service scheduling.

“I am a first time home buyer and not familiar with the boiler/heating system in my home and was apprehensive about finding a service provider to service my boiler. I def. made the right choice choosing Tandem Mechanical to service my boiler system. I needed my boiler serviced and Josh and Sam arrived today and serviced the boiler in a professional manner. Josh explained everything they were going to do before they started work. They were punctual, professional and went above and beyond. They also addressed questions I had on two other issues, one which could have been a problem later on if not addressed. I was very impressed with these guys and also the lady I spoke with re: setting up the appointment. Thank you TM! Much appreciated.”
